How do I convert a PDF to Word for free?

Will the Word file be editable, or just a picture of the page?

Editable. The default mode rebuilds the document as real Word content: paragraphs you can retype, headings in Word's own Heading 1-3 styles, bullet lists as bullet lists, and bold and italic wherever the PDF used them. The separate page-pictures mode is there for the cases where an exact copy of the layout matters more than editing.

How much of the original formatting survives?

Paragraph structure, heading levels, bullet and numbered lists, bold and italic, font family and size, text alignment, indents, page size and margins all carry over. Two things do not: a table arrives as aligned lines of text rather than as a Word table, and illustrations are dropped in text mode. If a page depends on either, convert that page range in page-pictures mode instead.

Can it convert a scanned PDF to Word?

It converts the file, but not into editable text — there is no OCR here. A scanned page carries no text layer to read, so each one goes into the .docx as a 150 dpi picture, which keeps the page count and the layout right. If you need the words themselves out of a scan, you need a converter that does character recognition.

Can I convert several PDFs at once?

Yes — up to 20 files per batch, converted one after another so a long queue never exhausts the tab. Every finished file has its own download button, and once at least two are done you can take the lot as one .zip.

Does it work on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. The converter runs in any current mobile browser, Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android included, with the same drop zone and the same .docx output as on a desktop. Very large scans are the one thing to watch: rendering their pages needs more memory than a phone always has spare.

What happens with a password-protected PDF?

The file appears in the list marked as protected, with a box to type the password into. Enter it and the conversion carries on as normal. The password unlocks the document and is then discarded — it is never stored or sent anywhere.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Reading the PDF and writing the .docx both happen inside this browser tab, so no copy of either file reaches a server. That is also why the tool keeps working with the network disconnected once the page has loaded.

About this tool

Pdf To Word is for the moment you have a PDF and need the words out of it — to quote a contract, revise a report that arrived as a print-out, or hand a document to a colleague who works in Word. It costs nothing, asks for no account, and does the job in the tab you already have open.

A PDF has no paragraphs. It is a list of glyph runs with coordinates, which is why so many converters hand back a page of disconnected fragments. This one measures the document first — its body text size, its line spacing, where its text column begins and ends — and then reads the structure back out of those measurements: a jump in font size is a heading, a gap wider than the document's own line spacing ends a paragraph, a line starting with a bullet glyph becomes a Word list item at the matching nesting level. Hyphens that only existed to break a word across two printed lines are stitched back up.

What it will not do is guess. There is no character recognition, so a scanned page is inserted as a picture rather than turned into text that might be wrong, and tables come through as aligned lines rather than as Word tables invented from column positions. Both limits are in the specifications above, because a converter that quietly mangles a document is worse than one that tells you what it left alone.
